The USC Emergent Cities Research Group has been exploring what research into evolving cities and urbanism could look like with the input and expertise of faculty from the Roski School of Art & Design, the School of Cinematic Arts, and the School of Architecture the Price School of Public Policy, the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, and Dornsife College.
The Emergent Cities Research Group is currently exploring the changing nature of Los Angeles. We are examining the ways L.A. is evolving and considering how its transformation can be evaluated and recorded. Other projects have assessed the emergent nature of international cities, including Chandigarh, Brasilia, Gaborone, Almere, Shenzhen, and Las Vegas. The group has focused on participatory and comparative urbanism as the research methodology and approach to cities and public engagement.
Learn more >>Emerge LA is a multidisciplinary and collaborative research project at that looks at the changing nature of Los Angeles and its many neighborhoods. The group has created a mobile application, currently in alpha testing, designed to give the people of Los Angeles a voice—using photos, videos, and sound recordings—to communicate and share what is important to them.
Learn more6 Under 60 is a collaborative research endeavor and interactive multi-media exhibition organized by members of the Emergent Cities Research Group and presented at the 2011 Shenzhen & Hong Kong Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism. This project analyzed six cities that emerged or were transformed within the last 60 years—Chandigarh, Brasilia, Gaborone, Almere, Shenzhen, and Las Vegas.
